AOC: Biden’s bad polls because of ‘young people who haven’t really been served’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., spoke to FOX Business on Friday about the Biden administration’s commitment to more progressive areas of grassroots Democrats and the party’s chances ahead of the 2022 election.

FOX Business asked Ocasio-Cortez what the consequences could be for the Democratic Party if President Biden doesn’t deliver on issues like student loans and the climate.

“I think we have to ask ourselves: what are we achieving, realistically, as a team and as a collective between our families? And I think the president has at his disposal an extraordinary amount of ‘options he hasn’t exercised yet, and his ability to do so will be critical,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Biden campaigned to cancel up to $10,000 in student debt per borrower, but the progressive wing of the Democratic Party asks him to cancel up to $50,000.

“We are all here to call on President Biden to uphold the movement that elected him and use his executive power to cancel $50,000 in federal student loan debt,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. ., About the issue last year.

Ocasio-Cortez told FOX Business that Biden’s stalled follow-up on student debt relief is dragging down his numbers in voter polls.

“It’s actually young people who haven’t really been served,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And their priorities were in BBB, which Sen. [Joe] Manchin is essentially at a standstill. And yet, you know, student loan debt and massive student loan forgiveness, what the president can do to service them.”

When asked if canceling student debt would be something she would want to apply to members of Congress as well as the general public, she said she favors “universal” policies on most questions.

However, the representative left the decision to the president.

“But, you know, whatever, whatever the president decides, he will decide,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “But it’s squarely within his jurisdiction. In fact, it doesn’t take an act of Congress to forgive student loan debt.”
