Oldham TOPS Higher Education Student Satisfaction in Greater Manchester – FE News

UNIVERSITY Campus Oldham (UCO) celebrates 2022 National Student Survey (NSS) results that rank it HIGH in the Greater Manchester area for overall satisfaction.

UCO, the Faculty of Higher Education (HE) at Oldham College, has an overall satisfaction score of 89% from learners taking all courses.

This ranks it higher than all other FE colleges in Greater Manchester – and is also 12.5% above the HE sector average.

The NSS – overseen by the Office for Students (OfS) – asks students questions about a range of factors relating to their academic experience.

The OfS highlighted that the UCO was significantly above the benchmark in four of the eight categories: assessment and feedback, academic support, learning community and student voice.

Alun Francis, Principal and Chief Executive of Oldham College, said: “NSS results are the benchmark of success and it is an outstanding endorsement from UCO students – the people who know us best.”

“We are delighted to see such high levels of satisfaction confirming the fantastic academic experience and the support that our staff provide in all courses. Learners gave UCO scores of 90% and above to a series of questions about the opportunities, help, inspiration, challenges and advice they get.*

“Most UCO students come from Oldham and surrounding boroughs and these results show how distinctive our offer is compared to residential courses at universities, for example, where you can be just a student among a cohort of hundreds.

“Smaller class sizes allow our expert tutors to give an exceptional experience centered on one-to-one, personalized support that you won’t get elsewhere. We help learners to adapt their studies to family life and other commitments, and studying locally also provides significant savings on costs such as accommodation and travel.

“We are still recruiting for the courses which will start in September. If you haven’t considered UCO yet, don’t hesitate to contact us – come and see for yourself why our learners are so satisfied and successful.

UCO has an excellent track record of nurturing high-achieving students**, as well as fantastic links with local and regional employers to help develop the next generation of highly skilled graduates in courses aligned with economics.

An example is Ian Kenworthy who has just completed a First Class BA (Hons) in Business and Management: a course which is rated 87% for overall satisfaction in the NSS 2022.

Ian took an EHCP throughout his earlier studies, but gradually stopped using the additional learning support at UCO – and was recently crowned ‘Higher Education Student of the Year’ by the Association of Colleges.

He said: “I am not at all surprised by these results as my experience with UCO has been so positive.”

“What I have really benefited from is the wide range and personalized nature of the academic and pastoral support available. The staff guided me to continuously develop different skills and extract my full potential to apply for all types of assignments.

“Furthermore, the student representation and opportunities for external challenges added greater value to my experience and directly contributed to my first class graduation.”

UCO opened in 2005 and has been Oldham College’s higher education offering since 2012, helping thousands of students achieve their goals at Foundation Degree and Honors Full Degree level.

It is expanding to include an exciting new range of qualifications for September 2022 in areas including mental health, counseling and psychotherapy, management and leadership, project management, IT and illustration. There are also still places available in the Master in Education (Teaching and Learning) for teachers and other education professionals wishing to deepen and develop their knowledge.

The easiest way to find out more or apply for a place is to go directly to UCO via the website at or by emailing the HE Admissions team at [email protected] or by calling 0161 344 8800.
